Homemade Liquid Dishwasher Detergent

Let me tell you making homemade household cleaners and beauty items has become very addicting for me. There is no stopping me now. I was searching for something totally different when I've come across this liquid dishwasher detergent. I couldn't help myself, I had to try it. Since I had all the ingredients I decided to go for it. For the last week or so that I've been using this, it seems to work very well. Now it's your turn to give it a try. Let me know what you think.

Ingredients:
8 Cups of water
3/4 Cups of Washing Soda (Not baking soda)
1/2 Cup of Borax
1/4 Cup of Liquid Castile Soap (any fragrance, I use lavender)

Directions:
  • Bring 4 cups of water to a boil.
  • Remove from heat and gradually add the washing soda, borax and castile soap. Stir gently until dissolved.
  • Once it is completely dissolved add the remaining 4 cups of water.
  • Place it in a container and cover for 24 hours.
  • The next day, you will notice that it has become like gel. Stir it until it is no longer a gel and use from the container you have it in or transfer it into smaller bottles for later use.

To Use:
I would recommend giving the bottle a good shake before each use to make sure all is mixed very well. I use only about a tablespoon for each load I do. I also found that using pure vinegar in the rinse makes the dishes shine even more.

This batch will make 1/2 Gallon.

    1. Hi Barbara,

It will be somewhat watery when you just finish making the batch. When you let it sit over night, the next day it should be very thick like gel. If this did not happen and you followed the recipe exactly then perhaps you added to much water. If so don't worry about it. Use what you have, don't throw it away. Just add a bit more to the dishwasher.

I've made this a couple of times and it has always come out the same. One thing that I've begun to do is use a hand mixer to blend it after sitting for the day. Instead of hand stirring I use a hand mixer and it comes out so creamy. I prefer this method better.

  3. Hi Barbara:
I am having difficulty obtaining powder Washing Soda and can only seem to find it in liquid form. Do you know if that would work just as well?

    1. I'm sorry but I never heard of Liquid Washing Soda so I am not sure if it will work or even if it is the same. Most Walmart and Targets carry this in the laundry detergent isle.

  4. Hi there wondering is you could use the bar castile and grate it up? or do I have to use the liquid?

  5. Hi Colleen,
I have not yet tried the bar soap but I do believe you can use it. When you add the other ingredients to the hot water then you can add the grated soap. I would use more of the grated. Perhaps 1/2 cup or a bit more. I would also think it would gel up more with it so you might have to stir or shake it more often. If you try it, please let me know how it comes out.
