Homemade Pigs in a Blanket/ Chinese Style Hot Dog

Thanks to a good friend of mine, Ruby, I will never go back to store bought corn dogs, bagel dogs or such. These hot dogs were amazing. I knew they were a keeper as soon as my hubby's eyes rolled back into his head. That means they were "Oh, so GOOD"! I have made a batch of these every week since I received the recipe from Ruby and that is a lot. This recipe is really easy to make and if your like me then you will make a double batch, bake and freeze them for a quick snack whenever someone needs it. They freeze really well and 30 seconds in microwave brings life right back to them.

There are instructions listed below for a bread machine and to make them by hand.

Ingredients:

2 Cups Bread flour
2 cups All purpose flour
1 cup Milk
2/3 cup White sugar
2 Tsp. Yeast
2 Eggs
1 Tsp. Salt
7 Tbs. Butter
20 Hot dogs

Directions for Bread makers:

  • Place all wet ingredients along with salt into the machine.
  • Then add all your dry ingredients. Yeast should be added last.
  • Setting should be set for 1.5 lb, dough only.
  • Once the dough is done kneading and has sat for a while to rise (about 1 1/2 hours from start to finish) then you can go ahead and begin to make your dough balls to wrap the hot dogs.
  • To measure out the amount of dough needed, I personally just grab a fist full until I have enough amounts for 20 hot dogs. Sorry, I don't have a better method.
  • Take your dough ball and roll it out into a long rectangular log, right about 6" long x 3'" wide (this is an estimate) It should be wide enough to cover most of the hot dog and long enough to wrap around twice.
  • Place the hot dog seam side down onto a nonstick or lightly oiled baking sheet.
  • Bake at 375 for 15 minutes or until golden brown. Times will differ from oven to oven.

Instructions to knead by hand:
  • Warm your milk, sugar and yeast and let it sit for 10 minutes.
  • Then add your eggs & mix well.
  • Both flours are added at this time. Mix until it forms a sticky dough. Right about 3 mins.
  • Add your warm butter and continue mixing until the dough is elastic. To test, stretch the dough and it should not break.
  • Place the dough on in an oiled bowl and let sit until it doubles in size.
  • Divide the dough into 20 pieces and shape into a ball.
  • Follow instructions that are listed above.

Instructions to freeze & Microwave:

Once your hot dogs are done baking and have cooled off you can place these in a freezer zip lock bag and freeze until ready to use. Microwave one frozen hot dog for about 30 seconds on high.
